Job Title: Ophthalmic Assistant (RN/RPN), Medical Mobile Eye Care Unit
Term: Contract 1 year (renewable)

Location:Sudbury and remote communities within Northern Ontario
Reports to: Manager, Medical Mobile Eye Care Unit

I. Scope and Summary of Primary Responsibilities
In covering a broad range of duties, this position is responsible for the onsite operation of the CNIB Medical Mobile Eye Care Unit (CNIB Eye Van) throughout Northern Ontario. The role includes, and is not limited to, supporting patient care, conducting health screening, operating medical equipment, collaborating with medical professionals, engaging community partners, and supporting administration of the program. Extensive travel is required throughout Ontario North.

II. Essential Functions
This position entails, but is not limited to the following general responsibilities:
• Conducts intake of patients, documents patient history and provides health education regarding prevention of eye disease including: diabetes retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma, AMD, and other areas of health and lifestyle.
• Performs tests and screening as per program guidelines, including vision testing, instillation of eye drops, use of ophthalmic medical equipment, and assisting with other procedures designated by ophthalmologist.
• Understands and coordinates pharmaceutical products and medical prescriptions. Prepares and sterilizes medical/surgical instruments following set protocols.
• In collaboration with ophthalmologist, assesses patients and recommends CNIB Vision Loss Rehabilitation through the referral for services procedure.
• Supports and provides orientation and training to volunteers, ophthalmologists, residents, medical students and community partners working with the program.
• Collaborates with a team that includes CNIB staff and volunteers, ophthalmologists, community health care professionals, and other partners.
• Participates in public relations activities including liaising with healthcare professionals, local service clubs, volunteers, the general public, and local media.
• Operates OHIP computer software to: manage patient appointments and follow-up; code and submit weekly patient diagnosis, testing, and billings; input and update patient information and treatment.
• Completes administrative tasks and computer backups; tracks statistics and provides reports based on program guidelines to Manager.
• Travels to communities; prepares unit for clinics including set up and testing of medical equipment, under-vehicle lift, information technology; reports any issues or concerns to manager.
• Ensures safe operation of all equipment and unit mechanics; follows guidelines for set up and take down in preparation for and completion of clinics.
• Follows maintenance schedule; identifies and reports all incidents and maintenance concerns to manager to ensure unit and equipment are in good mechanical order. Completes daily cleaning of clinic, circle check of truck and trailer and monthly health and safety reviews.
• Assists in troubleshooting and resolving issues with truck and trailer, medical equipment, computer, phone, internet and all other systems required for clinic operations.
• Maintains inventory; orders office, medical and pharmaceutical supplies; updates computer records as required.
• Assists manager in planning, collating data, distributing information, and organizing community health care education and awareness sessions.
• Performs tasks related to the pre/post Eye Van Tour including,but not limited to: reviewing procedures, training, testing of medical equipment, organizing medical and pharmaceutical
inventories and operational supplies.
• Completes various administrative tasks related to the program’s financial, operational planning, evaluation, and human resources, as required
• Completes driver training, including all courses related to obtaining an Ontario AZ driver’s licence. Drives truck and trailer to locations, completes daily and weekly reports and complies with the Highway Traffic Act always.

• Demonstrates professionalism, maturity and flexibility in developing and sustaining relationships with team members on the Eye Van and in the office.
• Participates in team meetings and other activities as required.
• Promotes a Culture of Volunteerism: welcomes and works effectively with volunteers, utilizing strategies to engage volunteers in meaningful opportunities and to recognize their contributions.
• Builds relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
• Collaborates with staff and volunteers to support Foundation and Vision Loss Rehabilitation services.
• Promotes understanding and awareness of vision loss related concerns and other related health care issues through consultation and public education.

III. Qualifications
Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
• Highly developed oral and written communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to multi-task.
• Possesses strong interpersonal, communication, conflict resolution and diplomacy skills.
• Demonstrates mature and sensitive nature when dealing with the needs of patients and persons experiencing vision loss.
• Demonstrates understanding and competency in using all technologies and software required to perform the duties of the job. Actively participates in available technical training opportunities.

Experience and Education:
• Registered Practical Nurse or Registered Nurse, Ophthalmic Assistant or Technician Certification.
• Must have valid Ontario driver’s license and provide a Driver’s Abstract.
• If selected as the successful candidate, must obtain Ontario Class AZ driver’s license (training provided).
• Ability and interest to travel from March to November inclusive.
